href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/19/multaq-safety-warning-heart-rhythm-drug-heart-attack-stroke_n_1159100.html">news sources, the drug Multaq is getting a new safety warning after a study found increased risks of heart attack, stroke and death associated with the drug with a subset of patients that took part in the study.

The heart rhythm drug controls the heart’s chambers by allowing them to pump in sync for patients with atrial fibrillation. The new warning would allow the drug to remain on the market but would stress to doctors and patients that it be used only for treatment of the short-term variant of the condition. People with permanent atrial fibrillation were shown to double their risks of heart-related complications by using the drug.

The Food and Drug Administration has written the warning label with the drug-maker, Sanofli, urging doctors to check their patients heart rhythms once every three months to ensure that no adverse effects are taking place. As for patients who have the long term variant of the condition, the FDA is recommending that they discontinue the drugs use.

The FDA also said that the drug continues to be beneficial to patients.

As a news sources, The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is aiming to make gel fuels and firepots safer for consumers by voting to begin publishing advance notices of proposed rulemaking to the public.

Consumers using gel fuel run burn risks when pouring it into an already lit firepot, since the gel can unexpectedly ignite and splash onto the users face or body. There have already been about 65 incidents reported between April 2010 through September 2011 relating to the use of the product. Of those incidents, two resulted in death and about 34 cases resulted in second and third degree burns of different body parts.

The measure would allow the public 60 days from the time of publication of any proposed rules to discuss the different safety aspects as well as the risks involved with using the product.

The CPSC began the process of investigating burn accidents resulting from the use of firegel products last June.

As a Recent studies have shown that self-awareness intervention and therapy can significantly decrease pain for fibromyalgia patients.

The study included 45 women diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic disorder with symptoms of excessive pain, tenderness, headaches and fatigue. The women were put into either an “affective self-awareness” group or a control group that would receive no treatment. The treatment group and control group had no significant differences in demographic or medical history.

The “affective self-awareness” group received a single 90-minute consultation with a doctor, then subsequent 2-hour weekly sessions once a week for three weeks. The sessions were made up of anywhere from 8 to 12 women and led by a doctor. The sessions consisted of educating the women on the psychophysiological model of physical pain in fibromyalgia, featuring support from case studies, homework for the women in the form of 30-minutes writing sessions concerning their emotions and stress, practicing affective awareness techniques and reintroducing the women to activities they’ve avoided due to the fibromyalgia symptoms.

A pain inventory scale, including tenderness-threshold scale and physical function evaluation, was given to each woman at the start of the study, then immediately after treatment and again six months after completion. Almost half of the “affective self-awareness” group experienced a 30 percent or greater reduction in the pain they experience, compared to none in the control group.

As a new study, roughly half of the patients seen by physical therapists are being treated for ailments not related to rehabilitation.

Blain Stimac, owner and CEO of Professional Therapy Associates, said, “Physical therapy is widely recognized for its effectiveness in helping patients recover and regain full mobility after an injury, severe illness or surgery. However, it’s a common misconception that physical therapy is only used for rehabilitative purposes- statistically, one in two patients visit us for reasons other rehab. Our physical therapists are experts at rehab therapy, but they also treat patients for conditions ranging from chronic pain, arthritis and repetitive strain to headaches, sleep problems and balance issues. They also provide strength, flexibility and endurance training to athletes and individuals looking to improve their overall health and fitness.”

Physical therapy can be a useful tool in treating many common ailments like back pain. Having a chiropractor correct the immediate issue will ease the pain for a short period of time; however, unless an effort is made to strengthen and stabilize the area of the back that is affected, the pain will return. Therapy can also aid those that suffer from arthritis by helping patients to learn different movements, exercises and stretches that will minimize pain and stiffness while strengthening muscles that support the joints.

As a <a

The Bears’ spine consultant and certified orthopedic surgeon Srdjan Mirkovic performed the corrective surgery on Knox’s spine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital Monday. Spine surgeon for Loyola University Medical Center Alex Ghanayem said that recovery from a single level vertebral fusion by saying, “The bone has to heal first. But (you) don’t start doing back exercises until two to three months after surgery, on average. In terms of getting back into sports… we’re talking six months after surgery is the rough minimum when you’re ready for full-fledged contact. But that depends on how much damage there was, too, at the time of the surgery.”

The injured receiver is one of three injured players in the Bears’ lineup as they head into the two final games of the regular season.

As a News agencies reported that E&B Giftware consented to pay the civil penalty of $550,000 in order resolve allegations from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that the company failed to immediately report a defect with their fitness balls.

The defective fitness balls could potentially explode if over-inflated, posing a general injury hazard to consumers. While agreeing to pay the civil penalty, E&B denies the allegations of the CPSC that the company knowingly violated the law. The CPSC staff claim that EB Brands, a E&B subsidiary, knew of the defect and subsequent 25 incidents back in 2007, but did not report this to the CPSC as per federal law. By the time EB Brands reported the defect to the CPSC in October of 2008, the company had received more than 44 reports of incidents with the defective fitness balls.

Three million of the defective fitness balls were sold between May 200 and February 2009. They were recalled in April of 2009. At the time of their recall, 47 reports of incidents where the balls burst, resulting in injury, had been received.

The CPSC stated, “Federal law requires manufacturers, distributors ad retailers to report to CPSC within 24 hours after obtaining information reasonably supporting the conclusion that product contains a defect which could create a substantial product hazard, creates an unreasonable risk of serious injury or death, or fails to comply with any consumer product safety rule or any other rule, regulation, standard or ban enforced by CPSC.”

As a news sources, a recall has been issued for about 21,600 Honda Goldwing motorcycles after it was found that the aftermarket Kuryakyn floorboards installed on them posed a potential injury or collision hazard. The hazard arises from the possibility of the floorboards breaking off or cracking.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that the faulty floorboards were installed on Honda Goldwing motorcycles with model years from 2001 through 2011. The floor boards can cause potential injury to the rider or collision because of cracking or breaking off while the motorcycle is in motion. Consumers can will also find a part number 607005 for the floorboards.

Consumers with the recalled motorcycles can expect to be notified by Kuryakyn beginning January. The company will reportedly replace the faulty part free of charge. Consumers who want additional information regarding the recalled product should contact the company at 715-247-5008.

As a News outlets reported that, because of the most recent ground beef recall that sickened 14 people last week due to an antibiotic-resistant strain of Salmonella, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) are petitioning for federal action on the increasing threat to public health from these bacteria.

Slaughter issued a statement saying, “When we go to the grocery store to pick up dinner, we should be able to buy our food without worrying that what we put on our plates is exposing out families to dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria. How much longer is the federal government going to wait before waking up to the public health threat, looking quite literally, under our nose? We have a duty to protect the public health, and frankly the foot-dragging we are seeing on this issue here in Washington is legislative malpractice.”

The CSPI is lobbying from a different perspective, petitioning the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to declare that specific antibiotic-resistant strains of Salmonella are adulterants, effectively making them illegal in meat and poultry products. The CSPI said, “That declaration would trigger enhanced testing for these dangerous pathogens, and could minimize their entry into commerce.”

As a News sources reported that the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in an effort to avoid future injuries and fatalities due to gel fuels used in firepots, voted to issue advance notice of proposed rulemaking concerning safety improvements to these products.

Gel fuels have been known to spontaneously ignite and splash onto consumers when poured into already-lit firepots. This poses a flash fire and burn hazard to consumers. The decision to improve safety to these products was prompted by the amount of injuries and deaths that have been reported in association with these products. The CPSC received 65 reports of incident between April of last year and September of this year. Two of those reported incidents resulted in death and around 34 hospitalizations were reported with injuries ranging from second to third degree burns on various parts of the body.

Consumers have 60 days from the time the CPSC publishes the proposed rules to comment on the risks of injury concerning these products. Additionally, publishing the proposed rules notifies the industry to the possibility that federal standards concerning their products, including labeling or performance of the products, may change. These federal standards may include new regulations or a ban, if no adequate standards can be found. Manufactured also have a chance during this process to present evidence of their effective industry standards.

As a <a

Respondent claimed to have delayed important servicing items decisions such as lightbulb, brakes, tires, along with a variety of other internal mechanical components.

Also of importance is the inevitable decrease in the value of the vehicle due to such delays. So far, one customer sustained a minor leg injury after a fall while wearing the shoe. The leather dress shoes have a three-inch heel, open toes, and a leather bow, with “Naturalizer” printed inside. They were manufactured in China and sold in Naturalizer stores across the country for $25-50 from July 2011 to November 2011. According to news reports, customers are asked to stop wearing the shoes and return them immediately to any store in order to receive a full refund.

As an Annapolis car accident lawyer, I hope nobody is hurt by wearing these shoes. Those who think they may own the recall should check to see if the shoe is undergoing a recall and return them immediately if they are. The shoes may be dangerous and cause injuries for those wearing them. A company is completely liable for a product they produce, and should be held responsible. If you or a loved one feel they were harmed by an unsafe product, get in touch with a <a

This safety recall was initiated after the company discovered that, when the liquid-filled scoop is exposed to warm water after being used, the cap and seal on the handle could pop off with significant force and strike consumers. The dippers are gray aluminum and have a rounded plastic cap at the end of the handle. The company logo can be found on the cap. The handle is filled with a non-toxic fluid that conducts heat from the user’s hand to more effectively scoop hard ice cream. The scoops were available through the company’s consultants and online from July through September of last year.

The Pampered Chef and CPSC have received 16 reports of the cap flying off, 6 of which include injuries ranging from lacerations to bruises and redness.

Consumers are being asked to stop using the scoops immediately and to call the company for instructions on obtaining either a replacement scoop or a refund.

As a press release, Naturalizer, in cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced the voluntary safety recall of their “Dare” women’s dress shoes because of a potential fall hazard they pose to consumers.

This recall affects roughly 6,100 pairs of shoes in the United States and 700 pairs in Canada. The recall was initiated after the company discovered that the heels of these shoes lean to either side and pose a significant fall hazard to consumers. The shoes are faux patent leather with a three-inch heel, open toes and a decorative faux leather box on the instep. The shoes were available in gray, nude, scarlet and black and can be identified otherwise by the “Naturalizer” logo inside the shoe along with the stock numbers. These shoes were available in Naturalizer retail stores across the nation from July through November of this year.

The company and the CPSC have received one report of a Canadian consumer sustaining a minor leg injury after falling while wearing the recalled shoes.

Consumers are being instructed to immediately stop wearing the shoes and to return them to any Naturalizer retail store for a full refund.

As a news sources, the state of Indiana is struggling to enforce its newly implemented ban on texting while driving, with police blaming the difficulty on how the law was drafted and written.

The ban went into effect July 1, 2011, stating that it was against the law for drivers to use any sort of hand-held device for the purpose of transmitting, reading or writing while behind the wheel of a moving car. However, by December 9, the law only resulted in 46 citations and 40 warnings in the whole state during the period of its enforcement, with some cities such as Muncie failing to issue a single citation.

Officials blame how the law is written, since officers are not permitted to confiscate cellphone devices of motorists being prosecuted for violating the ban.

As a news sources, a bill proposing the strengthening of fines for delaying car recalls is about to be considered by the Senate Commerce Committee tomorrow and is reportedly facing stiff opposition from automakers.

The main point of contention in the Motor Vehicle Safety Act bill relates to the maximum fine that an automaker must pay in cases where a proven delayed recall announcement was taken. Currently the maximum fine stands at $17 million. The proposed fine would replace that maximum fine amount to $250 million instead.

The bills advocates point to documents that reportedly show that Toyota was able to save about $100 by delaying two recalls relating to sudden acceleration. The company was forced to pay a $32.4 million fine for both delayed recalls. The bill has been reportedly called “unfair” and “out of proportion” by certain auto industry groups.

The bill also includes a provision to prohibit car rental companies from renting out recalled vehicles to unknowing consumers.

As a new study reported that there is further evidence that patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia react differently to exercise stimulation.

CFS and fibromyalgia are both chronic multi-symptom illnesses that have significant clinical and diagnostic overlap. In previous studies, it was shown that patients with fibromyalgia and CFS do not display abnormal cardiorespiratory responses during maximal aerobic exercise when company to non-fibromyalgia and non-CFS controls, other than differences in pain and exertion reported.

The current study used 21 CFS patients, 13 having comorbid fibromyalgia, and 14 healthy controls to complete 20 minutes of submaximal cycling exercise. Each patient was monitored using impedance cardiography to chart cardiac responses during the test. Systolic blood pressure, perceived exertion and pain in the leg muscles were also measured. The data was then analyzed.

Researchers found that there is a significant multivariate “Time by Group” interaction between the subjects with CFS and fibromyalgia, CFS only and the healthy controls. The CFS and fibromyalgia group displayed a higher stoke index, ventilatory equivalents for oxygen and carbon dioxide with perceived exertion, lower systolic blood pressure and similar heart rate responses.

As a recent studies from The Obesity Society, obesity is on the rise across the nation and one-third of obese patients complain of musculoskeletal conditions, especially back pain.

While there is no one reason that overweight and obese patients experience back pain, there are many contributing factors that raise the likelihood of it occurring.

Chiropractor Dr. Angela Hee said, “Being overweight can increase the stress and strain of the muscles and ligaments in the spine, especially in the lower back. The lower back curve can become distorted, causing the pelvis to tilt in an abnormally exaggerated manner. Poor posture, lack of spinal flexibility and weak core muscles may lead to sprains and strains, nerve impingement, herniated discs and degenerative arthritis.”

While surgery may once have been the norm for fixing such ailments, many doctors are now shying away from the practice; at least until the patient is at a healthier weight prior to surgery. Overweight and obese patients have a much higher rate of complications and infections post-surgery when compared to those at healthy weights. In order to aid in spine and back health while attempting to lose weight, remember to target the core muscles, as these help to support the upper body and will aid in taking strain off of the lower back.

As a back pain doctor, I know how important strong core muscles are in the relief of lower back pain. Remember to speak with a pain management doctor prior to beginning a new exercise regime, especially if you have preexisting health conditions compounded by obesity.

Related posts:

<a
