63 traffic accidents every day in Hampton Roads, which is fewer than last year. An explanation for this may be that travel has decreased 3.5% since 2006. The rate of auto accidents have lowered 27% in Virignia since 2004, and nationally it has decreased 14%. 121 people died in wrecks last year in Hampton Roads, representing the fewest in a decade. The roads with the largest reduction in accidents over the past decade is Portsmouth. According to news reports, the most common behavior leading to crashes was following too closely, followed by distracted driving.
