Man Uses Doll to Drive in HOV Lane

A stuffed children’s TV character posing as a second passenger could not save one man to get to work quicker, after the Washington State Patrol pulled the driver over for driving illegally in the HOV lane.

The driver, who was not identified in news reports, told the state patrol he was running late for work, so he put his daughter’s Diego doll, a cartoon character on Nickelodeon, in his front passenger seat. He said he hoped the doll would look like a second passenger and he wouldn’t get pulled over for driving in the carpool lane.

The trick, however, didn’t work and the man was issued a citation.

However, according to the state patrol, “Diego was practicing good safety habits and was buckled up.”

As a Seattle car accident attorney, I think it’s good that the state patrol is properly enforcement of the HOV lane during rush hour. Although it may be a pain to sit in traffic on the Seattle freeways, properly managing the HOV lanes play an important role in safety and flow of traffic. On the morning the man was pulled over, Nov. 29, the WSP issued 21 other HOV violators, according to news reports.
